Pesticides are used in several agricultural sectors to protect crops against insects, diseases, and weeds. However, these products can pose health risks if they are not used correctly.
InfoTET Quebec reminds temporary foreign workers (TFWs) of the importance of following safety measures to prevent accidents and protect their health at work.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
When working with pesticides or in a treated area, your employer must ensure you are provided with appropriate protective equipment. This may include:
- chemical-resistant gloves
- closed-toe shoes
- long-sleeve shirt
- long pants
- protective coveralls
- safety goggles
- mask or respirator, depending on the product used
The equipment must be in good condition, properly fitted, and allow safe work.
Employer Responsibilities
Your employer must:
- use only pesticides approved in Canada
- strictly follow label instructions
- provide necessary training
- supply required protective equipment
- inform workers about safety measures
After Pesticide Use
Never enter a treated area until you are told it is safe.
- Safety Interval (DS): period during which no manual work is allowed in the treated area
- Pre-Harvest Interval (DAAR): period during which crops must not be harvested or consumed
Compliance with these intervals is a legal requirement.
Good Practices
