InfoTET at the Heart of a Soccer Tournament and the Celebration of the Torch’s Arrival in Sherbrooke

On September 13, 2026, more than 150 temporary foreign workers (TFWs), primarily from Guatemala and Mexico, gathered at Atto-Beaver Park in Sherbrooke to take part in a major soccer tournament organized by (AIDE) Actions interculturelles de développement et d’éducation. The sporting event continued with a celebration of the torch’s arrival, an important tradition for the Guatemalan community during Guatemala’s national holiday.

The tournament gave participants an opportunity to come together through soccer and enjoy time with one another. Several teams competed until the winning team was selected, followed by the presentation of medals to the participating teams.

The day continued with the torch run, attended by representatives of the Consulat du Guatemala. Although this tradition holds special significance for the Guatemalan community, people from different backgrounds also joined the celebration, helping create a space for intercultural connection and sharing.

InfoTET from Immigrant Québec was present to introduce its program and services. On this occasion, Jonathan Buitrago, regional coordinator, presented the InfoTET Québec program and distributed the Guide for Temporary Foreign Workers. This document provides practical tools on TFWs’ rights and responsibilities, as well as essential information about services and resources available throughout Québec.

The gathering also provided an opportunity to speak directly with workers, answer their questions about their rights and responsibilities, and guide them toward resources suited to their needs.

By taking part in these types of activities, InfoTET can connect with workers in an accessible and welcoming setting while helping them become more familiar with the resources available to them.

InfoTET extends its warm thanks to the entire team at AIDE- Actions interculturelles de développement et d’éducation, particularly Aura Maria Forero, Said Beltran, and Andrea Contreras, for organizing the event, welcoming the participants, and collaborating on the initiative. InfoTET also thanks the representatives of the Consulat du Guatemala for their participation. This initiative highlights the importance of local partnerships in strengthening connections with temporary foreign workers and facilitating their access to information and resources available in Québec.
