FIFA World Cup 2026™: Key Information for Temporary Foreign Workers (TFW)

Canada will be one of the host countries for the FIFA World Cup 2026™, which will take place from June 11 to July 19, 2026, jointly with the United States and Mexico. Ahead of this major event, the Government of Canada has confirmed that no special measures will be implemented under the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program.

Will there be special work permits for the World Cup?
No.
No special work permits or general exemptions will be created for the FIFA World Cup 2026™. All current rules of the TFW Program remain in effect. The program remains temporary and is used only when no qualified Canadian citizen or permanent resident is available to fill the position.

💰 Low-wage jobs: rules maintained
The rules for low-wage jobs do not change during the World Cup:

  • In regions where the unemployment rate is 6% or higher, new Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIA) will not be approved for certain positions.
  • At a single workplace, temporary foreign workers in low-wage jobs cannot exceed 10% of the total workforce.

These measures will remain fully in effect throughout the event.

Possible exceptions (limited cases)
Some exceptions may apply, but only in very specific situations:

🕒 Short-term work

  • Generally 120 calendar days or less
  • Created for a specific event
  • The position ends when the worker leaves the country

🌍 High-mobility work

  • Jobs where workers regularly cross borders
  • For example, technical or specialized staff working in multiple countries or provinces

These exceptions do not apply to all sectors and are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

🎟️ Can I work during a World Cup match?
It depends on the type of work. Even for a short-term job, a valid work permit may be required. To work or participate in activities related to the FIFA World Cup 2026™, you must meet the usual requirements of the TFW Program and Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
