An inspiring evening at La Relance: supporting and connecting with TFWs in Quebec

On March 17, as part of its mission to share information, InfoTET by Immigrant Québec had the pleasure, in collaboration with the teams from L’Ancre and Desjardins, of visiting the Adult Education Center La Relance in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Following our first visit to Marieville, we received a warm welcome at their Saint-Jean location to meet participants attending evening French classes and to present the InfoTET Québec program.

La Relance plays a key role in supporting adults, including many temporary foreign workers (TFWs), in improving their French. Despite often long and demanding workdays, participants demonstrate remarkable motivation and commitment. Learning French is an essential tool—not only for better integration into Quebec society, but also for accessing professional and community opportunities.

During our visit, we had the opportunity to move from classroom to classroom, meet TFWs from Colombia, Mexico, Guatemala, Haiti, Cuba, and Brazil, and present the services offered by InfoTET, L’Ancre, and Desjardins. These exchanges created a space for participants to ask questions, share personal experiences, and better understand the resources available to support them during their time in Quebec.

During the activity, Jonathan Buitrago, Regional Coordinator of InfoTET by Immigrant Québec, took the opportunity to present the InfoTET Québec program and distribute the information guide for TFWs. This guide provides practical tools on workers’ rights and responsibilities, as well as information on available services and resources across the province. The discussions were highly enriching, allowing us to answer questions, listen to participants’ experiences, and better understand their needs—reinforcing InfoTET’s mission to provide clear and useful information throughout their stay in Quebec.

We would like to extend special thanks to Joannie Giroux, Liaison Officer at La Relance, Karla Duenas from L’Ancre, and Alejandra Orozco from Desjardins for their support and collaboration. This visit was not only informative but also inspiring, filled with meaningful encounters and genuine conversations with participants determined to build their future in Quebec.

This experience highlights the importance of creating spaces for dialogue and connection for temporary foreign workers, providing access to reliable information while strengthening their sense of inclusion and belonging within Quebec society.
