Information Session for TFWs: Tenants’ Rights and Obligations in Quebec

At InfoTET, we believe it is essential for Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs) to clearly understand their rights and obligations related to housing in Quebec. Access to reliable information is a key tool to prevent abusive situations and to help TFWs make informed and safe decisions.

In this context, on Friday, January 30, 2026, we had the pleasure of participating in the free information session “Tenants’ Rights and Obligations”, organized by Granby Industriel. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Gloria Amparo Brand Escobar for her excellent work and dedication in organizing this activity.

The session brought together nearly 50 temporary foreign workers from Colombia, Guatemala, Cameroon, and Senegal, who showed strong interest in better understanding how the rental system works in Quebec. The main objective of the workshop was to inform participants about their rights and responsibilities as tenants, in order to prevent abusive situations and clarify common concerns, particularly in light of recent changes related to rent increases.

The session was highly dynamic and interactive. TFWs raised concrete questions based on real-life situations, including:

  • When can a worker leave their housing if they wish to move?
  • Is it possible to terminate a lease in the event of job loss?
  • What actions can be taken if the housing conditions are unsanitary
  • What happens if rent cannot be paid following a loss of employment?

This session helped demystify many situations experienced by TFWs, addressed their concerns, and provided practical tools to better defend their housing rights. It also highlighted the importance of being well informed before signing a lease and of seeking support when facing difficulties.

In addition, InfoTET’s regional coordinator, Jonathan Buitrago, took the opportunity to present the InfoTET Québec program to participants and distribute the new edition of the informational guide for temporary foreign workers. This direct interaction allowed for questions to be answered, experiences to be shared, and a deeper understanding of workers’ real needs, further strengthening InfoTET’s mission of guidance and support.

At InfoTET, we value initiatives like this one that strengthen the autonomy and protection of temporary foreign workers. We continue to work in collaboration with partner organizations to provide clear, relevant, and accessible information adapted to the realities of TFWs in Quebec.

We invite temporary foreign workers to follow our activities and consult our informational resources to stay informed about their rights, obligations, and available services.
