On September 14, 2025, Atto-Beaver Park in Sherbrooke hosted an unforgettable day for more than 200 Temporary Foreign Workers (TFWs), organized by AIDE – Actions interculturelles de développement et d’éducation. The workers gathered to celebrate not only the end of the work season but also the cultural richness that their community brings to Quebec.
The main event was an outdoor soccer tournament that brought together workers from the agricultural and industrial sectors with closed work permits. Participants came from Guatemala, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Haiti, Peru, Costa Rica, Morocco, and more. Everyone shared a day filled with energy, camaraderie, and team spirit.
Taking advantage of this important multicultural gathering, the event also celebrated Guatemala’s Independence Day, first declared in 1821. The commemoration included a traditional and moving flag-and-torch run, symbolizing Guatemalan freedom, in which the Guatemalan workers enthusiastically took part.
Although the celebration was dedicated to Guatemala, TFWs from Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia also joined in, reflecting a spirit of inclusion and solidarity among communities.
The Consulate General of Guatemala in Montreal accompanied the community throughout the day, offering on-site consular services and actively participating in both the “Traída de la Torche” ceremony and the awards ceremony for the tournament teams.
Jonathan Buitrago, regional coordinator of the InfoTET program at Immigrant Québec, was also present. He took the opportunity to connect with the workers, listen to their experiences, and strengthen the support networks available in the region. He also distributed InfoTET guides to provide essential information on the resources, rights, and services available to temporary foreign workers in Quebec.
Beyond the sports and festivities, this day was a true expression of community, dignity, and cultural pride.
A huge thank you to everyone who made this day possible: your energy, solidarity, and commitment continue to build bridges beyond borders.
