Last weekend, the recreational park in Berthier-sur-Mer was the setting for an unforgettable day for more than 90 temporary foreign workers (TFWs) from Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Madagascar. Organized by the CDEMM and led by Élyse Mercier, this soccer tournament was not just a sports competition—it was a true celebration of community, diversity, and integration.
Under clear skies and bright sunshine, teams made up of TFWs faced off in matches full of energy, respect, and good vibes. Beyond the final scores, the most important thing was sharing laughter, building friendships, and enjoying moments of camaraderie on the field. At the end of the day, the Guatemalan team took home the champion’s trophy, but every participant was a true winner.
After the physical effort, participants enjoyed a delicious barbecue with hot dogs and cold drinks. It was the perfect opportunity to relax, chat, and continue strengthening the bonds between colleagues and members of the local community.
During the event, the Infotet Québec team, accompanied by its project director Nicolas Bellier, was present to distribute informational guides and explain to the workers the mission of the Infotet program, funded by the Government of Canada. The objective was to provide TFWs with tools and information to know their rights, access services, and have a safer and more supported work experience.
Representatives from CAFLA and Justice Pro Bono were also present to offer legal advice and support to those who needed it. Their presence was greatly appreciated by the participants, who were able to resolve their questions and feel heard.
This type of activity shows that integration is possible when there is willingness, respect, and spaces to share. The soccer tournament in Berthier-sur-Mer was much more than a sporting event: it was a demonstration of solidarity, inclusion, and support for those who come from far away to work and build a better future.
